The Department of History, from its very inception in 1970, caters to the higher education needs of rural students of the region. Under-Graduate courses in History were introduced in 1970. Post-Graduate courses in History were established in 1982. The Bharathidasan University has recognized the Department as the center for Ph.D programme. Tiruchirapalli as in 1989. Nearly 1600 undergraduates and around 350 post-graduates have successfully completed the courses through their Department. Nearly 150 scholars have obtained M.Phil degrees including blind candidates. |

Three teacher-scholars have completed successfully PhD programme in History. At Present 6 candidates are working for Ph.D
programmes. In the field of research, the Department. is
specialised in "Social Cultural History of
Tamilnadu".
The students of the Department are regularly exposed to varities of Indian Society and Culture through Annual national Tours.
The Departments library has a good collection of source books, journals and eminent books of
