The
students were also given a separate health card for three years
specially prepared by camp-doctor Dr. Veeraiyan. The doctor was
available anytime for the children which was a boon to us. Though
in the beginning we felt the number of out -patients were many,
slowly it was reduced in the second year, (May 2001). Each and every
student was carefully examined by the doctor and his team. The height
and weight of the students were on the progressive line for all
the three years. For these boys to avoid contagious viral diseases
a homeopathic drug was also given.

Saturday
means a joyful day for the students as they would go out for visual
learning. In the first year the students were taken to Brigadeswara
temple, King Serfoji's palace, Museum and Archeology, Sivaganga
park, pudukkottai museum, Chithanna Vasal, Tamil University, and
Arignar Anna Sugar Factory. In the second year the students were
taken to Thenperambur, (Cauvery anicut), big temple (for studying
epigraphy), Anjalai Ammal Engineering College and the Planetorium
in Tiruchirapalli, Pollution and Water aaalysis unit, Jamal Mohamed
College and the grand anicut. All these places stimulated the students
very much. The students at this age to have an entry into the professional
colleges gave some food for thought and they began to contemplate
upon what they wanted to be in their future life. The family background
and the atmosphere created by the YSSP had an impact on the young
ones.
In
the third year, the programme was started on 30th April itself and
closed by 27th May as the students would be busy in applying to
different schools for 11th admission. In the final year the students
were taught theory of 11th standard and practicals were converted
into projects. Totally 39 projects were selcted from different subjects
(Botany, Zoology, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Computer Science).
From each subject 5 solved projects were given to them and they
were asked to do them practically. This had really enthused the
students because they had something solid with them to show that
they were the students of YSSP of Thanjavur and Thiruvarur districts.
They were taken to Manora near Pattukottai, bird sanctuary at Vedaranyam
for fossils and Patteswaram for archeological study. The three year
programme for the children not only made them perfect in their studies
but also changed their outlook. They became eager to learn science
in life. The students' questions to their parents are amazing and
parents say that the boy is learning many things on his own after
attending the programme.

Rtn.
Chellappa from Pattukottai says the programme is highly beneficial
to his daughter and even the schools can implement every year such
programmes so that the rural children can be benefited. Creative
learning, sharpening the intelligence, inquiry into the subject,
ambition to learn, willingness to bend towards the modern application
in learning system are some notable changes that can be seen among
these children. If this system is brought into the curriculum, the
future generations will definitly prosper.
Reasoning power will be developed. The programme was concluded by
Thiru K. Thulasiah Vandayar who spoke on culture, education and
younger generation and future prospects of the nation. Dr. K. Subramanian,
Member Secretary TNSCST told that this project was taken up as a
pilot project by Tamilnadu and that Tamilnadu is leading among the
other states. This programme, he said, needs the support from Education
department for proper implementation among schools. Thanks to Tamilnadu
State council of Science and Technology, Chennai and Human Resources
Development, New Delhi, this model programme could be implemented
successfully for three summers. We also thank all the members of
staff, parents, children and the management of AVVM Sri Pushpam
College.
